Lane Cove Council's Bushcare Officer, Michelle Greenfield, loves every part of her job from organising volunteers, caring for the environment, being part of the Lane Cove Community Nursery, to helping implement exciting new initiatives such as the Eco Garden.
With over 220 volunteers to co-ordinate, life is always busy for Michelle and she wouldn't have it any other way.
"Our volunteers are mostly Lane Cove and Greenwich residents, but we also have people coming from Gladesville and Epping. Our volunteers are people who want to learn more about sustainable gardening, indigenous plants or bushcare, and also enjoy the social aspects of gathering in groups with like-minded people who care for the environment," said Michelle.
"Some volunteers like to get involved in bush regeneration. Others like to gather the seeds of local native plants for propagation in the Lane Cove Community Nursery. There is something for everyone who cares about the environment and living in a sustainable community," said Michelle.
"Although volunteers generally meet once a month, the volunteer program is very flexible."
Last year volunteers at the Lane Cove Community Nursery propagated 10,000 local native plants. These plants are used for bush revegetation, Council projects, bushcare groups and for the National Tree Day project run through local schools.
The new Eco Garden looks at new ways to create sustainable water-wise gardens, recycling and composting. It will also feature an outdoor classroom to hold workshops on sustainable living, chemical-free cleaning, waste reduction, propagation and eco-gardening.
